East of The Heights inside the loop, Houston, Texas
Join me for a relaxing meditative afternoon at my bungalow learning the textile craft of sashiko. Sashiko means ‘little stabs’ in Japanese. It was used in ancient times as a decorative way to mend textiles. Today it can function the same or be used as decorative embroidery. I practice sashiko and use cotton sashiko thread to hand quilt my quilts.
If you have questions, send me a note at [email protected]

The image pictured here is my mother down at Sultana Point, South Australia, wrapped in The Curramulka Quilt, hand quilted during the months of March - May, 2018, while returning home to Australia. |

TEXAS MONTHLY MAGAZINE FEATURES CAMPFIRE QUILTS

"Quilting by hand adds so much value to the quilt in so many ways. I think in a world where most of our products are machine made, there is something romantic about building a product that comes to fruition slowly. My love and devotion to this old craft is seen in those imperfect human stitches."

Quilting By Hand: An Ongoing Homage to My Lineage,
My Spirit & Other Things
I need healthy hands,
I need a healthy spirit,
I need my memories,
I need my lineage that built quilts, gardens, lace, businesses, children & sheep skin moccasins,
I need my family healthy,
I need my 8 month baby in utero to be born healthy,
I need my friends healthy,
I need protection from the arthritis I am bound to inherit,
I need protection from the dementia I am bound to inherit.
That is all I need.

ART YOU CAN SLEEP WITH
by Michael Hardy HOUSTONIA MAGAZINE For the last 16 months, Australian-born artist Ebony Porter has been hand-stiching quilts that, like her minimalist paintings, feature bold geometric shapes and patterns. "There's a debate in the art world about whether quilts are craft or whether they're art," says Porter, who received her BA at Texas State and now lives in Houston. "I believe they're both. A quilt just comes to life in a different way than a painting on the wall - we stay warm with it, we lay on it, we use it to build a fort." You heard right, folks - you can make a fort with these artworks. Read the entire article here |
THE QUILT SHOW
at Art Palace Gallery Opening Reception October 25th, 5-7pm October 25th - December 20th, 2014 Ebony Porter presents a selection of hand-quilted pieces inspired by a cross-section of the American landscape, cultural histories, folklore and minimalism. As studies in patience and repetition, each stitch is evidence of a moment, collected and aligned. Porter's work pieces together time, space, heritage and destiny.
